Explorer “ROCK” Test

In order to successfully complete the “ROCK” test, the candidate must:

In full Firefighter personal protective equipment, with an SCBA on your back (not on air), the candidate will carry 100 feet of 2.5” hose with alloy couplings, on his or her shoulder. The candidate must travel back and forth six times, for 25 feet each way, six times. After crossing the marker the sixth time, the candidate will remove the hose bundle from his or her shoulder and the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

For the second task, the candidate must pull a 100-foot rolled section of 2.5” hose; hand over hand, for 50 feet, until the hose roll crosses the marker. After completion of this task, the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

For the third task, the candidate must travel back and forth six times, for 25’ each way, between two markers. During this time one foot must pass the marker to complete one trip. This is done without the hose bundle. After completion of this task the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

For the fourth task, the candidate will strike a 4”x 6” piece of wood 24 times with a 12-lbs. Sledgehammer. Prior to each strike, the head of the sledgehammer must rise above the candidate’s shoulders. After completion of this task the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

For the fifth task, the candidate will proceed to the 100-foot serpentine and walk from one end to the other. The candidate will not run at any time. Running constitutes both feet off the ground at the same time. After completion of this task the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

For the sixth task, the candidate arrives at the other end of the course at the end of the fifth task, and he or she must advance a 150-foot section of 1.75” hose, charged at 80-psi, 100-feet and hit a marker 25-feet away with a straight stream. At that point, the nozzle will be placed on the ground. After completion of this task the candidate will proceed to the next task without stopping.

The seventh and final task consists of moving a 180-pound mannequin in any manner, 100’ to the end of the course. At this time, the test is complete.

This is not a timed event. However, if the person being tested should stop for more than 20 seconds at any point during this test, or not complete this test, you will have failed to successfully complete this test. Any candidate participating in this test will be permitted to wear athletic footwear in place of fire boots.
